Temple Jr. College bound!

You have followed them in the highschool sports headlines, now Jarred Zumwalt, a recent Luling High School graduate; and Ty Condel, a recent Shiner High School graduate, are both set to attend Temple Junior College in the fall; and, both will be playing baseball for the Temple Leopards.

Scrambled or fried?

These Scramble golfers know how to beat the heat

 

The August 3, 2016 Wednesday Scramble was a hot one, but two teams manages to come out on top, despite the heat and humidity. At left: first-place winners were Tanner Davis, Billy Breitschopf, Ryan Lee, and West Villiansano; and, at right second-place winners were Gary Chrismon, Frank Ingram, Ralph Aguirre, Omar Mata. Way to go Scramblers!

RUNNER-UP

Texas Swat 16-U, comprised of girls from Gonzales, Yoakum, Shiner and Hallettsville, won second place in the Summer Shootout at Huber Ranch on July 17. The girls played eight games total and six of the eight games were back-to-back matcheups.

2016 Šťastný Háček Fishing Tournament

On July 8th and 9th, anglers from all over South Central Texas embarked at the Lamar Volunteer Fire Department in Rockport, Texas, to take part in the 11th Annual Stastny Hacek Fishing Tournament. This annual fundraiser is for the Religious Education Endowment Fund, which supports Shiner and surrounding community youth who attend Shiner Catholic School and the CCD program.

Lions, Rotary renew 76-year rivalry

The Noon Lions Club has challenged the Rotary Club to a softball game, revitalizing a local tradition. Scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 16, both service organizations are prepared for a fun-filled morning with a competitive nature to it. The game will take place at the Quadraplex next to the soccer fields in Independence Park. Historically speaking, the first event of its kind was played way back in 1940.

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football ranks area programs

The Dave Campbell’s Texas Football (DCTF) magazine has released its predictions for every high school football program in the state. The staff at the magazine ranks every program all the way down to the district level. Though preseason opinions are largely based on returning players, coaches and previous year success, they often serve as an insight to the season ahead.

Apache Flames attend Showmakers Dance Camp

The 2016-2017 Apache Flames Dance Team recently attended Showmakers Dance Camp in Austin, bringing home the Sweepstakes Trophy and a Superior Ribbon for their home and camp routine. Kalie Leal and Isabel Vela were honored with All-Star nominations and received an invitation to participate in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York and the Florida Citrus Bowl Halftime show. Six of the girls (Kalie Leal, Cali Malatek, Jade Canales, Isabel Vela, Gabby Garcia and Caytlyn Molina) were awarded Miss Superlative given to only 20 percent of the 200 campers in attendance.

Gonzales Juniors conclude successful postseason

The hard-hitting Gonzales Juniors All-Star team completed their multi-round run through the Luling tournament this past Saturday. Though they lost an early round game to New Braunfels, the young athletes won enough to reach the championship game on Saturday. Coming off an 11-8 victory over Seguin on Wednesday, June 29th, the team faced New Braunfels a second time for the tournament title. Though they lost 13-3, the boys can hold their heads high having finished with a second place showing.
