Area sports roundup
The Gonzales baseball team defeated Poteet 10-2 on Thursday.
Tyler Janota limited the Aggies to a pair of runs on a single hit while striking out 14 Poteet batters in the process.
“We managed to get key hits with men in scoring position tonight,” Gonzales head coach Larry Wuthrich said. “We had three sacrifice flies with runners on third tonight, which is what winning teams do. Tyler threw another gem and gave his team a chance to win.”
Area softball roundup
The Flatonia Lady Bulldogs softball team is 6-0 on the season after winning the Schulenburg Tournament last week and its district opener on Monday.
On Thursday, Flatonia beat Halletsville, 3-1, to open pool play in Schulenburg. Katie Steinhauser took the win with a no-hitter. Courtney Mica was 2-for-3, Steinhauser was 1-for-3 with three RBI, and Taylor Williams earned three walks.
St,. Paul girls fall short of state title
The St. Paul Lady Cardinals concluded their season Saturday with a loss to Muenster Sacred Heart, 66-49, in the TAPPS 2A state title game at Mansfield Legacy High School.
St. Paul led 11-10 after the first quarter, but Sacred Heart got a 17-12 run in the second to lead 27-23 at halftime.
Sacred Heart scored 15 points in the third and held the Lady Cardinals to just six. St. Paul stormed back in the fourth with 20 points, but Sacred Heart bested them by netting 24.
Apaches still searching for consistency
The Gonzales Apaches picked up a victory as they went 1-2 in the Yoakum tournament over the weekend.
The Apaches started the tournament Friday against La Grange, who will be in their district starting next year, with a 12-0 loss.
“We faced La Grange’s No. 1 arm,” Apaches head coach Larry Wuthrich said. “He had 17 strikeouts and threw a no-hitter.”
The score was 2-0 going into the fifth innings and the Apaches allowed five unearned runs. Tyler Janota fell to 1-2 on the season.
Defense rides to the rescue as Brahmas upend Marion, 10-7
FLORESVILLE -- Two teams known for their offenses slugged it out for four quarters in a defensive struggle Saturday night before the Hallettsville Brahmas held on for a 10-7 victory in Class 2A bi-district playoff action.
The Brahmas (6-5) advance to face the San Diego Vaqueros (6-4) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Rockport-Fulton in second-round action.
Both the Brahmas and the Bulldogs piled up the points this season, but neither could get their ground game untracked Friday and defense was the name of the game.
Volleyball Roundup: Lady Mustangs sweep to win; Hallettsville wins
The Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs swept Jourdanton on Tuesday, 25-18, 25-12, 25-12. Devon Martinez had seven kills; Jessica Flores had 10 assists; Jennifer Martinez had 11 digs; Hailey Boatright and Abigail Scarbrough had a block each and Brooke Gordon had two aces. Nixon’s serving percentage was 88. The Lady Mustangs junior varsity won 25-16 and 25-10.
Striders claim medals in district meet
The G-Town Striders Gonzales track club competed in the South Texas AAU district championships and regional qualifier in Round Rock over the past weekend, picking up one silver and three bronze medals.
The Striders now will set their sights on the national qualifier in Converse June 30 - July 2, with the top five in each event qualifying for the national Junior Olympics in New Orleans Aug. 1-6.
Medaling for the Striders this past weekend were Ty Roaches 2nd in the discus, Khelsea Cray 3rd in the shot put and 2nd in discus ,and Kendra Cavit 3rd in the 3000 meter run.

Apaches drive past Flatonia in tourney
The Gonzales Apaches bounced back from an opening-round setback to trim Flatonia by a 5-1 score Friday in the Weimar baseball tournament before poor weather canceled Saturday’s final round of play.
The Apaches fell to Bellville by a 10-6 score in Thursday’s opening round, but came back to beat Flatonia as Ckody Burton and Tyler Kuntschlik combined on a three-hitter.
GHS girls grab top honors in meet
The Gonzales girls track team competed at the Texas State Meet in San Marcos Saturday and won several top honors.
Tammashay Jefferson led the Lady Apaches effort by finish first in the shot put and second in the discus.
Shelby Zigmond took second in the High Jump, second in the 100 meter dash and first place in the 200 meter dash.
Marlena Hunt took second in the long jump and sixth in the 200 meter dash.
Maria Aguayo took fifth in the 3200 meter run and fourth in the 1600 meter run.
