Slideshow: North Ave. students raise $1,200 for West victims
After the tragic events that happened to the small town of West, Texas, North Avenue Intermediate decided to come together and help out. The North Avenue Student Council held a money drive to raise funds to send to West, Texas. The grade levels (5th and 6th) competed to see who could raise the most money, and announcements were made each day to track the progress of the earnings. In one week’s time, the students and faculty of North Avenue Intermediate raised an amazing $1200.00 to send to the people of West, Texas. What a wonderful accomplishment!

CWJC graduates celebrate
Christian Women’s Job Corps of Gonzales County recently held a graduation celebration for its seventh class of women who completed the 11 week job/life/computer skills training program. CWJC began in January 2010 as a women’s ministry which uses a Biblically based curriculum which focuses on offering women a hand up not a hand out. Graduates are from left to right: Victoria Rosales, Rose Sampleton, Shirley Kuchynka, Sherry Poe, Director, Tina Martinez, Yolanda Renteria. Fall classes will begin the day after Labor Day.

On Friday, April 19, fourth grade students at Gonzales Elementary were treated to a sweet deal – the chance to pie a teacher! Janica Arellano, Robert Gilliam, and Christine Presley, all 4th grade teachers, volunteered to be pied, all in the name of fun. “Our students and teachers have been working really hard all year, it was time to have some fun and let loose before the STAAR,” said Presley. The fourth graders cheered on their fellow students and teachers as the pies went flying! H.E.B.

As an incentive for attending school every day, all 7th and 8th grade students have the opportunity to win $15 dollars each Friday of the year. Spoetzl Brewery recently made a generous donation to the Shiner Gaslight Theatre. The contribution will be used to help offset expenses incurred by the recent redecoration of the theatre lobby area. Gonzales County Paramedic Damon Curry, Gonzales County EMT Dawn Curry, and Schertz EMS student Dylan Robinson (a 2012 Nixon-Smiley graduate) spoke with Nixon-Smiley third grade students about the importance of reading, writing, and math in their own jobs. They also shared with the students how becoming a rescue worker/first responder (like police, firefighters, and EMS) involves taking classes, studying, and preparing for big tests – just like 3rd graders have prepared for the STAAR test.
