Nixon tables plans on recycling policy

NIXON— At the regularly scheduled January council meeting, Nixon members started the meeting by tabling any decision-making on city recycling, being told their annual audit report had not been finished on time, and suspending the implementation of a proposed rate increase by Texas Gas Service for 90 days.

Nixon council finalizes matters with refinery

NIXON — The Nixon city council was informed at its regular monthly meeting this week that a meeting Wednesday afternoon will bring about the completion of grant stipulations required by the state of Texas from Lazarus, the previous owner of the oil refinery.
The council was told that all monies will have been paid and the quota of local employees will have been met, and the city of Nixon expects to officially be released from pending and limiting obligations by Jan. 1.

Cleaning Up Nixon: City seeing immediate impact from focus on code enforcement

NIXON — On Monday, Nov. 21, the city of Nixon hired patrolman Mike Villarreal of the Nixon Police Department as its code compliance officer. And he’s quickly earning a reputation for refuting the argument that “Things never change in Nixon.”
Villarreal works four days a week from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. During his first three days, 10 notices were issued for excessive weeds and high grass, abandoned cars, junk (defined as “salvage”), and mobile homes without skirting.

…that a free Thanksgiving ZUMBA class is being offered by instructor Patsy Scherrer? It will be held at the Richardson Christian Center in Nixon on Monday, November 21 from 6:30–7:30. The introductory class is for anyone over twelve years of age.


…that the Second Annual Leesville Thanksgiving Dinner will be held on Saturday, November 19 from noon until 2:00? The meal is sponsored by community churches and will be served at Encouraging Word.

Nixon council designates week for honoring businesses

NIXON —The Nixon city council met Monday, November 14 in its regular monthly meeting with the following members present: Mayor Bonnie Chessher, John Mercier, Cindy Pieprzica, Hector Dominguez, and George Pena. Dorothy Riojas was not present.
After a presentation by PABS Management, LLC regarding recommendations and fiscal advantages to be found in a city-wide recycling program, council members agreed to consider the possibility.
Stop signs were approved for the corners of North Washington Avenue and East 5th Street, making the intersection a four-way stop.

…that St. Joseph’s Catholic Church will hold its annual turkey dinner fundraiser this Sunday morning at the parish hall in Nixon? Plates including turkey, dressing, all the trimmings, and tea will be served for $7.00 each, beginning at 10:30. There will be a bake sale, raffle, and silent auction.
…that Maria Gonzales will re-open her Tea Cup Restaurant in downtown Nixon in the near future? We await, Maria! 

Nixon First Baptist welcomes Linton as church’s new pastor

Nixon First Baptist Church welcomed Rev. Michael Linton as its new pastor in October. The family is finally moved into the parsonage from their former home in Kingwood, a suburb of northeast Houston, and he is ready to lead him new congregation.
Rev. Linton (who prefers to be called Michael) sees the church’s role as that of reaching out to the community, and, in turn, far beyond the reach one may be able to see. The mission of the church is to spread the gospel.

…that the Smiley Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual fundraising event on Saturday, November 5, 2011.  This year’s event will have a BBQ meal, raffle, cakewalk and silent auction.  The Smiley Firemen are selling raffle tickets.  Chicken and sausage plates will be served from 5:30 until gone for $8.00 a plate.  The raffle drawing will be held around 7:00.

…that Smiley is hosting a Halloween costume party with treats on Monday night from 5:30 to 6:30? And that it’s not too late to join the group of sponsors? Vickie Griffin is the contact person.

…that Nixon patrons and businesses refused to let their Trunk ‘r Treat go by the wayside on this, its sixth year? The spook gathering will be held in the parking lot of Super S Foods–Lowes on Halloween at 7:00. Yolanda is the contact person at 582-1251.
