How do you restore respect for the church? Proclaim truth without compromise

There was a time in America when the Church had a position of respect and trust. When Church leaders spoke, society listened. But somewhere along the way, the Church has lost that influence. Instead of being listened to today, the Church is either ignored, charged with intolerance, or both. Jesus called for the Church to be salt and light in the world; to influence the world in a positive way. But the Church, in the name of tolerance, has too often failed in its call to be a positive influence on society.

Today’s Christians face intolerance from ‘tolerance’

Today, there are elements in society who are consciously attempting to remove Christianity from every aspect of American life. As a result, Americans today live in an increasingly anti-Christian environment.

Faith and Family: God expects us all to control our emotions

Have you ever noticed how difficult it sometimes is to be obedient to Scripture? I’m not talking about obeying big things like not committing adultery, murder, theft, or idolatry. I’m talking about those commands in Scripture that tell us not to let our emotions rule us. Things such as “Fear not,” repeated more than 300 times in Scripture. Instructions to “Be angry and sin not,” to “Count it all joy when you fall into various trials,” “Love your enemy,” or to “Have a merry heart.”

Should Christians get politically involved?

Many very sincere Christians are convinced they should not actively participate in the political activities of an increasingly secular world.  Citing Scriptures such as “You are in the world, but not of the world” and “...

In the Land of the Bible: Don't be oblivious to Livius

My seventeenth day in Jordan and Israel was on a Saturday. Normally, We did not do any archeological work on Saturday, but on this day Dr. Graves planned to try to find the exact route of a Roman Road that went from Heshbon (currently called Hesbon) to Livius. Dr. Scott Stripling was going with him, as was one of the Jordanian workers from the Jordan Department of Antiquities. The rest of the team were taking the day off, but I had decided to go with Dr. Graves, Scott and Quatiba {Ku tee ba}. The Roman Road had been explored at both ends and Dr.

Personal worth at the heart of Christianity

Perhaps there has been a time when someone has challenged your theological views by asking the question, “Why do you believe in Jesus?” What good does it do? If you are a Christian, a question such as this should challenge you to examine your faith more carefully to see how you can Scripturally answer the question. But many sincere Christians have difficulty expressing why they believe Christianity is essential to them. Although they know it is good for the soul, they sometimes have trouble pointing out the good Christianity does for all mankind.

Twenty-four days in the land of the Bible: Part III

Last week I wrote about working at Tell-el Hammom in Jordan. On day four, we awoke early, packed and left Amman to go to Jerusalem. Crossing the border was a pain. It took nearly two hours to clear security. When we finally finished, we drove to the Kenyon Institute in Jerusalem where we stayed. The Kenyon Institute, like the hostel in Amman, belongs to the British Archeological Society and you must join their Society before you can stay at the hostels. Dr.

Twenty-four days in the land of the Bible: Part II

In my article last week, I gave the background of the events leading up to my participation in an archaeological expedition to Tall el-Hammom, the site of Biblical Sodom and several other cities. In today’s article, I want to begin to share some of the places and experiences I enjoyed on this trip.

Twenty-four days in the land of the Bible: Part I

Recently, I had the opportunity to make the trip of a life-time. Through a good friend, I was invited to go on an archaeological dig in Jordan and Israel. By the grace of God, I was able to make this trip and it was truly incredible. Since my return, several people have asked me about it.
While speaking with Nikki Maxwell, she suggested I share my story in the paper. The following is my response to her suggestion.
