Winners announced in Luling’s ‘Heart of Texas’ children’s show
The first “Deep in the Heart of Texas” Children’s Art Show was held in the Central Texas Oil Patch Museum in downtown Luling in late January.
The artists were third grade students from Luling Elementary School. There were 99 entries, each depicting the child’s interpretation of the theme - The heart of Texas. Some featured traditional images of Texas life with horses and the Texas flag, while others focussed on the heritage of Luling with bright watermelons and gushing oil rigs.
Moving on but not moving out
Since the public announcement of my changing job status in last week’s issue, I have received numerous phone calls, emails and visits.
I want to thank the friends and readers who have shared their thoughts and support for my decision. Many of them told me they wish I wasn’t leaving The Cannon, and recalled specific articles we published since the newspaper was established in August 2009.
Local veterans show Apache pride runs deep
Gonzales Apache pride runs deep, like the pride of being a U.S. military Veteran. The two merged on Apache Field last Thursday when a little known historic fact about the U.S. Army’s Apache helicopter (AH-64) was shared with the crowd during the Gonzales Independent School District Veteran’s Day Celebration. The aircraft was parked on the 50 yard line as a backdrop to the ceremony and pep rally which followed.
Kids, crime and computers
I had a very interesting conversation last week about the amount of robberies in our community lately.
There have been nearly twenty cases of theft in Nixon over the past few months. We even had our own break-in at The Alcalde Hotel in Gonzales, site of The Gonzales Cannon Newspaper offices. Two large flat screen televisions and a digital projector were stolen from locked offices in our building during two separate burglaries. The crimes happened within seven days of each other. (You can read more about this in today’s issue.)
A Fish Tale
"Fishing is an activity anyone can do, no matter how old they are, and with a minimum amount of money," Brazeal said. "Plus our events are free."
Gonzales official asks, “Got Game?”
Dove hunting season began in Texas in mid-September, and Game Warden Jason Davis said it has been very busy. The birds are not native to Texas, and fall into a migratory animal category.
"This is a common region at this time of year for doves because it is part of their migration path," said Davis.
To legally hunt doves in Texas you need a hunting license with a migratory game bird endorsement, and your shotgun must only hold three shotgun shells at one time.
