A large sink hole appeared last week on Saint Joseph St., across from the Gonzales Post Office and North Avenue Elementary School. The cause for the sink hole is unknown at this time, however sewer drainage pipes are visible at each end of the gaping hole. (Staff photos by Nikki Maxwell)

This sink hole is due to extremely old storm sewer pipes collapsing. They are all over Gonzales. If you look directly across the street from where this is, you will see 2 rectangle concrete items that look like they have no buisness there. These were actually an old crossing in which this pipe possibly went under. There are pipes like this extending behind the Alcalde (A sink hole occured here about 30 years ago), and all the way up to the Top-o-town area (we played in this one when I was young) just to mention a couple of them.
From what I recall growing up in Gonzales long ago this area was overwhelmed with trees and scrubs that covered the entrance to an old sewer system that went under the whole length of North Avenue. It went from the sinkhole, under the playground and under the school itself until coming out behind the church on the opposite end of the school. I remember playing in this as a kid too... it started off large enough to walk through but got smaller on the other end and having to crawl out. There are so many of these old walk through sewers in Gonzales that no one knows about. I think this incident should be brought up in city meetings so that other old sewers can be evaluated and be addressed before another sinkhole occurs and possibly take someones life.
