Drop-offs at Gonzales HS to change

By Gonzales Cannon News Services
Posted August 19, 2010 - 8:36am

Gonzales High School will have different student drop off and pickup designated areas for the 2010-2011 school year when school starts on August 23.
There will be no student drop off and pick up at Building 1, the Main Building, because of the pending construction of the new band hall.
Warpath Lane will be blocked from Highway 90A.  Warpath Lane from the south has been designated as the Bus Lane for bus drop off and pickup of students and will only be used for faculty and staff access to the teacher parking lot to reduce traffic congestion.  It will also only be used for visitor parking for parents or other visitors conducting business in the office.
Student drop off and pickup lanes have been designated behind Building 3, the AG building, and the junior parking lot.
These new procedures will be used until the completion of the new band hall in the summer of 2011.

I wonder why GISD waited until school is just starting to begin all the construction work at the various schools?

I notice that the new sports complex at GISD baseball field was completed before school started.

Sports must be more important than the other curriculum

Donald,

Where have you been all these years? But of course football and baseball are more important than academics. Just look at the rosters of professional sports teams laden with Gonzales born talent (hint - the previous sentences are dripping with sarcasm). We have money for field houses but not for alternative campuses which demonstrably kept at-risk students in school. Parents, let me be the one to burst your bubble. Your sons and daughters may be fine athletes - at this level. But none of them, I repeat, none of them, will play major league sports. Both of my sons played all sorts of athletics. My job as a responsible parent was to make sure they were equipped for the real world, not a fantasy. Pro football is a fantasy. Pro baseball is a fantasy. Pro basketball is a fantasy. You can either prepare your child to excel in academics or vocational skills, or prepare them to chase a pipe dream. One will equip them to seize their future, the other will see them struggle. The choice is yours. Yours to make at the ballot box, yours to make at parent/teacher meetings, yours to make when your children need to study or do homework. Think about it.

Just to clarify: the field house renovations were approved several months ago. The band hall renovations creating the traffic issue were not approved until they had been re-designed to suit the specifications of the GISD administration and the staff at the school, the project was bid in the summer AFTER the field house construction had already been started and the bid was awarded in July about the same time the field house was complete.

As to how the order of the projects was set, my best suggestion is to attend a school board meeting and ask the board. I've heard no one speak for nor against any of the renovation projects at any of the last several board meetings.
