Medina outlines proposals to eliminate property taxes
HALLETTSVILLE—“We must ask ourselves if we are truly free in Texas if government can take our home and property long after we pay for it…. Two things make Texans truly free: private property and guns.”
These were Debra Medina’s opening statements to a large crowd at the annual meeting of Lavaca County Taxpayers, Inc., last Thursday at the Sacred Heart Family Center in Hallettsville.
Medina formed We Texans, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization promoting public policy and legislation advancing and protecting private property and personal and economic liberty. She talked about why the elimination of property tax is a Constitutional issue and not a monetary one and explained how a sales tax to replace the property tax will add over 100,000 new jobs for the state and add an additional $12 billion to the Texas economy.
The Texas Center for Economics, Law & Policy has released a fiscal analysis recommending the elimination of property tax in Texas. This study will serve as the basis for property tax elimination legislation being drafted for the coming 2011 Texas Legislative session.
During the business meeting, members nominated and elected the 2011 Lavaca County Taxpayers, Inc., Board, which are as follows: Directors at Large – Eugene Vasek and Mary Lee Spaulding; Director of Technology – Jim Grafe; Secretary – Kathleen Leininger; Treasurer – Susan Grafe; Vice Chair – Kevin Myers; Chair, Marie Day.
Special thanks is extended to Father John Peters for his invocation and to Alley Bar BQ, Moulton, for catering a delicious meal.
