Christian fellowship is alive and well at "Snake's Garage"
Periodically I tune into a TV. program called “The Eyes of Texas”. In case you haven’t watched it, it focuses upon points of interest around our great state. It is a wonderful show and it often features the most eccentric individuals that you would find anywhere.
We have a place right here in Gonzales that would be a great focal point for that show. Have you ever been to “Snake’s Garage”? Several years ago Snake (Nathan Gordon) retired from his mechanic shop but the doors were never closed. Every morning Monday-Friday, beginning around 8:30, men from all over the area gather to sit, drink coffee and thoroughly analyze the world situation. Most of the time things go pretty smooth but occasionally someone gets irritated and leaves the “meeting” a little bit early.
They joke of having a board meeting as people arrive. Now the neat thing is, it provides a wonderful place to gather for the rich and poor, the down and out, the up and out, Democrats, Republicans and diplomats from far and wide. Here you can find anyone from a Retired General to 3rd grade drop-out and they all get along real good.
By the way, the coffee is always going and this time of year the wood heater is there for you to back up to and warm your back side. How about some music? Folk’s it just doesn’t get any better than this! Charlie Gordon, son of the proprietor, and maybe the best lead guitar picker in the world, provides the stimulus.
Then the marvelous local talent begins to pour in for an hour or so of “good ole fashioned singing”. Meanwhile, the dogs howl and the donkey’s bray and the harmony is great. By the way, we haven’t heard the donkey lately so we are not sure what happened. If you should see “Ole Jack” let um know down at Snakes Garage cause he was a vital part of the quartet.
Oh, if you ever need to get caught up on the weather; you know like how much it rained last night or if we are going to get one of “them there blue norther’s”, this is better than CNN, Fox, or MSNBC. Did you say news? Hey, here you get a balanced report because everyone will quickly share his/her opinion and one again, yep you guessed it, better than CNN, Fox or MSNBC.
Now here is the best part, people come by if they are discouraged, down and out, happy, sad, mad or glad they are always received with open arms. You see in reality, it is here that you see Christianity in action every day from 8:30-12:00. Snake Gordon, is known for a certain amount of B.S. (that is P.R. with an odor) but he has a heart that is truly as big as Texas.
Much of what I have said is in jest, but the fact is, people are being ministered to every week day from 8:30-12:00. Do you remember the verse of scripture in Galatians 6:2a? “It says bear one another’s burdens!” Folk’s, that’s what is happening around Snake’s Garage. Isn’t that refreshing?

Hollas,
This sounds like it would also be a great story for the television program called Texas Country Reporter. Have you heard of it? It airs every Sunday morning.

If you want to submit an idea for a story, here is the webpage for it:
