Gonzales Leos have a busy month

February was a busy month for the members of the Gonzales Leo Club as they prepared for their second annual Carnation Sale. This year Carnations would be delivered to people all over town instead of just at high school as it had been done the last year. However, long before the club knew all the details Leo Gabby Lopez was working hard to make sure everything was in order for the big day.
Early in the school year, Lopez took on the responsibility of planning for the club’s biggest fundraiser for the year. With a goal of selling 500 carnations, she went to different flower shops, made many phone calls but finally found the best deals at Angel’s Stop and Gift Shop located on 332 St. George St. Jeanette Burton, the owner, was happy to help.
Leos started sales in the end of January and sold right up until Valentine’s Day. On February 12, Leos Sarah Stout, Directors Katie and Lindsey Kuck, Vice President Tianlu Ma, President Brent Baker and myself, the Public Relations director, met at Burton’s shop along with Lions Holly Rodriguez, and advisors Karen Perez and Wesley Rodriguez and future Leos Oriana Moreno and Andrew Rodriguez, to wrap cellophane and tie ribbons around 500 flowers. 2 hours and 30 minutes later they were done. The time and effort that Lopez put into this project paid off as they raised $750 profit to benefit future projects for the club.
Gabby Lopez was named February’s Leo of the month at the March meeting for all of her effort and tremendous work ethic to accomplish the project.
Jeanette Burton, who was born and raised here in Gonzales, was a great pleasure to work with on this project. She, along with her husband Bobby Burton, were very helpful in providing what the Leos needed to carry through. From the cellophane to the flowers, they were ready to do what they could. Burton sells other things besides flowers and plants. They have jewelry, balloons, Yellow Box, Corky’s, Christian items, as well as other gift items. Burton says that they will help with any school or church function. Currently, they are offering discounts for prom.
The Leo Club could not do half of our projects without all of the help and support we receive from people like Jeanette and Bobby Burton. The Club would like to thank them along with our parents, sponsoring Lions Club, and community for all of your support!
