N-S trustees receive construction update on new gym, library
NIXON—Construction updates, as well as student computers, were the prime topic for trustees as the Nixon-Smiley Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees held its regular monthly meeting Oct. 18.
Superintendent Dr. Cathy Booth told trustees the district’s new gym and library, a $13 million project, is expected to be complete by next summer, which will help launch the next phase of the district’s plans to switch the locations of the middle and elementary schools.
Once the library is complete, Booth said, the middle school will move to Nixon from Smiley and share the library with the high school, while the elementary school will be relocated to the middle school campus in Smiley.
An $850,000 grant will also enable the district to distribute new laptop computers to students in grades 7-12. as a result of the grant, students will be able to connect to the internet not only at school, but at 11 other locations throughout the community.
High School assistant principal Jane Iams, Middle School instructional specialist Anita Van Auken, and Elementary instructional specialist Jana Wheat also offered reports to trustees on internet safety.
