Heroin found in inmate’s incoming mail

LOCKHART – Caldwell County Sheriff Daniel C. Law announced that on September 14, an alert corrections officer at the Caldwell County Jail was inspecting the incoming mail before issuing it out to inmates.

 

He discovered a hidden compartment in a greeting card that held an amount of a brown-colored powdery substance between the layers of the card. Narcotics detectives were notified and after a brief investigation, determined that the substance was 1.4 grams of heroin.

 

Further investigation led narcotics officers to a suspect in San Antonio. Jose Angel Alvarez Jr., 60, was arrested on Friday, September 28 and charged with delivery of a controlled substance, penalty group 1, second degree felony, >1 gram < 4 grams, and was released after posting a $10,000 bond.

 

Further investigation and additional criminal charges are pending.
