There are better ways to help panhandlers

There are better ways to help panhandlers.
I have had a lot of jobs in my life but never had to stand on a street corner to get one.  Nor have I ever had to beg for money with a piece of cardboard.
Sure I have gone to mom and dad. Friends have come to me for 50 bucks or vice versa. For that matter I have never collected unemployment. I am talking about panhandling
A few years ago I worked on Capitol Hill in D.C. I had to go through Union Station every day on the subway. Getting from the train to the street makes Tail Hook look like a Sunday social. Therefore I gave one bum $50 a month to keep the rest of the bums away from me.
I told him if I were approached one time he would lose his money for the month. It worked; I created a job. In defense of my conservative self-adulation, he was crippled and I felt he was incapable of getting an everyday job like someone other person without disabilities.
With the economy in its present situation I am sure there are “real Americans” who are out there begging to make ends meet just like Joe Biden said. In my experience most are drug-using criminals who don’t want food or a job. They just want folding money.
I have seen that to be the case in D.C. because there are literally hundreds of fountains with piles of coins in them for the taking if (they) did not mind wet feet or a little work.  But there is the rub: Work!
I am all for average people pulling up and confronting this criminal element and telling them to get out of your neighborhood. Pull up in your car or walk up to them and give them a good old fashioned, “This town is not big enough for both of us” speech.
What, are you afraid they will shoot you in broad daylight with 12 cars idling nearby?  Stand up for something or crawl back to suburbia.
Would you stand by if someone was robbing your neighbor’s house?  I read about a guy in Houston who shot the people that robbed his neighbor and the grand jury refused to indict him.
At some point you have to stand up and say your behavior is not welcome in our town.  Just like with people who throw cigarette butts out of their cars. Because it does not matter if it is Third and Division in Spokane, Wash., Congress Street in Austin, Texas or S-R 355 in Rockville Md.
Panhandling is undesirable behavior that breeds crime and unease. I know what Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Arizona would do with these people. He would run them into his jail and give them a job sweeping dirt on the side of the highway.
If you want to give money to the homeless, how about the Salvation Army?
Or use your phone. I am sure they have an app for that.
