Gov. Rick Perry on Thursday issued a state disaster declaration for 40 Texas counties — including Gonzales, Lavaca, Caldwell and DeWitt counties — which will help speed recovery assistance to communities and families affected by Tropical Storm Hermine by opening the door to state and federal assistance.

While high-school football fans in Gonzales County are dancing in the streets these days (in between tropical storms), there’s some head-scratchin’ going on over in DeWitt County, where they’re not used to seeing more numbers in the “L” column than in the “W’s.”

The yearly cycle of spring, summer, fall and winter really doesn’t mean much to most Texans. Here, there are only two seasons: football and bikini. And a lot of us like it when the two combine.
There’s some locals who are doing their best to change that perception, however. They’d like to insert “basketball” in there between football and bikini, and they’re playing the caliber of ball which might win them a few converts.

I usually refrain from giving advice to high-school athletes. Aside from the fact that advice from 50-year-old men with zero athletic ability probably doesn’t mean much to 17-year-olds -- it didn’t when I was 17 -- it also intrudes on the domain of coaches. And since I need coaches who are reasonably cooperative in order to be able to do my job, I do my best not to step on their toes too often.

Dec. 4:Out here, sports are part and parcel of being part of the community -- it’s an Event, and you always take part in Events. Maybe that’s something that those of us who were born and bred in the suburbs could really use these days: a dose of community.

While millions of Texans will no doubt digest their dressing this week watching the Cowboys or Longhorns or Aggies or all of the above, the boys of the Mundy family will get together and, perhaps, re-live our greatest football moment.
