One of the stereotypes which has attached itself to the game of football is the picture of the gruff old coach explaining to the hand-wringing mommies what the game will teach their sons: “Football teaches kids character.”

I realize some of y’all who are sports fanatics will question my qualifications to the esteemed title of sports writer when I say this, but I have to be truthful: I don’t follow college sports very closely.

The yearly cycle of spring, summer, fall and winter really doesn’t mean much to most Texans. Here, there are only two seasons: football and bikini. And a lot of us like it when the two combine. I usually refrain from giving advice to high-school athletes. Aside from the fact that advice from 50-year-old men with zero athletic ability probably doesn’t mean much to 17-year-olds -- it didn’t when I was 17 -- it also intrudes on the domain of coaches. And since I need coaches who are reasonably cooperative in order to be able to do my job, I do my best not to step on their toes too often.
