After getting out-scored 23-2 in their first two outings of their own tournament, the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs needed something good to happen in Saturday's third round of pool play.
That something good was pitcher Garrett Ruiz and a sudden awakening of the Mustangs' bats: Ruiz tossed four innings of no-hit ball and the Mustangs rapped out nine hits en route to a 9-2 victory over San Antonio Homeschool.

The Poth Lady Pirates took an early lead and held on Tuesday to stun the state-ranked Lady Mustangs by a 47-33 score and claim the District 28-2A girls’ basketball title.
