Balanced 'Cats subdue Pirates
The musical tastes of most of the players on the Waelder Wildcats’ roster follow the trend among most of today’s young folk, but they’d likely be right at home with some old Beatles fare as well.
After all, they get by with a little help from their friends.
The Wildcats continued their tuneup for a post-season run at the Class 1A Division II title Tuesday with a 90-47 romp past out-manned Nordheim in a game which saw six Waelder players score in double figures and seven players record assists.
“That’s something I’ve always tried to stress, that it’s a team game, and we have a very unselfish team,” said Waelder coach Jarvin Hall after his squad improved to 18-9 overall and 7-0 in district play. “Tonight we were able to get some guys in there to get some minutes in to help us get ready for the playoffs, and even though we started slow, we did very well.”
Waelder never trailed in the game after an opening basket by the Pirates, and built a 36-19 halftime lead before erupting for 54 second-half points.
The Wildcats scored the first 10 points of the second half and 30 points total in the third quarter as the Pirates, who suited just five players for the contest, found themselves unable to keep up with the fast pace Waelder set.
Franky Carrillo paced the scoring for Waelder with 21 points, while Chris Sirillo added 17, Corey Fonseca scored 14, Corey Wilson had 13 and Dontrai Houston and Dylan Reed had 10 apiece.
Houston also collected four blocked shots in the contest and the Wildcats out-rebounded Nordheim by a 42-26 margin.
For the Pirates, who stayed game to the end, Skylar Martinez scored 19 and Chris Baumann had 10 points.
The win followed Friday’s in in the big showdown with Moulton, where the Wildcats claimed a 50-38 triumph and secured their hold on the district lead.
Houston paced the Waelder attack with 17 points in that contest, while Wilson scored 12 and Sirilo had nine.
