Wildcats wrap up title, ready for post-season

The Waelder Wildcats grabbed the District 28-1A Division II title on Tuesday by rolling past Runge 73-56.
The Wildcats, 21-9 overall and ranked No. 18 in the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll, improved to 8-0 in district action. They take on Moulton (10-12, 6-2) in a showdown at home on Tuesday.
Corey Wilson gunned in 28 points to pace the Wildcats in the win over Runge, while Dontrai Houston added 18 and Franky Carrillo scored 17.
In girls’ action, the Ladykats came up on the short end of a 53-33 score with Runge. Anjes Aguilar scored 14 points to pace Waelder, while Morgan Williams had six.
In Friday’s action, the Wildcats held off Austwell-Tivoli by a 67-65 count.
Houston’s 21 points paced the Waelder attack in that contest, while Chris Sirilo scored 15 and Wilson had 14.
In the girls’game, Aguilar had 12 points and Williams scored nine but the Lady Redfish pulled out a 42-31 win.
