St. Paul overpowers Cornerstone, 62-0
SHINER—It reached a point Friday where some members of the officiating crew began joking that they hadn’t signed up to do so many long dashes up and down the field.
The St. Paul Cardinals scored six first-quarter touchdowns Friday — four of them by running back Adam Hollenbach —en route to a 62-0 whipping of the short-handed San Antonio Cornerstone Warriors in non-district football action.
“We wanted to make sure our kids didn’t have a big letdown from last week (a dramatic win over Pettus), but we knew Cornerstone had some injuries and they’re a real young team,” said St. Paul coach Jake Wachsmuth, whose team led 55-0 at halftime and let the clock run continuously in the second half after Hollenbach took the second-half kickoff and ran it back 95 yards for his fifth TD of the night.
“It was good to be able to get a lot of the kids into the game,” Wachsmuth added. “They’re out there practicing just as hard as the starters, it was good to see them get some snaps.”
Wachsmuth even granted a lineman’s dream wish to big Blake Radicke, who stepped into the fullback spot late in the contest and churned out a six-yard gain.
The Warriors, with several key players on the sidelines in street clothes because of injuries, were out of the game almost from the onset. Hollenbach scored on St. Paul’s first play from scrimmage, a 36-yard run following a turnover, and on its second play just 50 seconds later — rambling 98 yards following another turnover.
He added another 3-yard scoring run midway through the first period to make it 20-0, and after the St. Paul defense forced three straight incomplete passes by the Warriors, Martin Kennedy bolted right up the middle for a 48-yard touchdown.
Another three-and-out for the Cornerstone offense put the ball back in Hollenbach’s hands when he returned the punt for an apparent score, but that play was called back on a holding penalty.
The call merely delayed him a bit. Three plays later, he finished off his quarter with a 17-yard scoring run and a 34-0 lead.
The Cardinal defense held Cornerstone without a first down in the first half, and forced yet another punt on the next possession. St. Paul responded with another one-play drive: this time it was Brandon Metcalfe racing 73 yards to score and make it 41-0.
The Cardinals added a pair of second-quarter TDs. The first came on a two-yard dive by backup quarterback Dakota Kresta, the second on a 35-yard burst by Kennedy.
The Cardinals rushed for 446 yards on just 26 carries, with Hollenbach accounting for 165 yards on seven totes and Kennedy piling up 143 yards on just five carries.
The St. Paul defense, led by Dylan Barton, Blue Hybner and Chase Cappelman, forced two Cornerstone fumbles and picked off three passes while holding the Warriors to just 105 total yards.
