Fiesta Guacamole set this weekend in Waelder

The 33rd edition of Waelder’s Fiesta Guacamole opens there, Saturday, Sept. 4, running through Sunday, Sept. 5.
A new feature for this edition of the annual Labor Day Weekend festival is a full scale Barbecue Cook off. Trophies will be awarded for the best Beef Brisket; Pork Spare Ribs; and Chicken Halves.
Cooking teams of up to 4 helpers plus a chief cook are invited to enter, with the entry fee before Sept. 1, $40; after that, $50. Team check-in time is 8 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 4, and all cooking and judging to takes place on Saturday.
Teams may enter the grounds, however, between 6 and 10 p.m. on Friday. They may not leave until judging is complete, and all cooking grounds must be cleared by 10 a.m. on Sunday.

As in previous years, there will be evening dances both nights with live bands. The traditional Guacamole contest takes place at 2 p.m. Sunday, and the Big Auction, Sunday at 4 p.m.
The annual parade is at its usual 1 p.m. on Sunday, and St. Pat’s Sunday Mass is at the Park at 11:30 a.m.
As in recent years, all Fiesta activities take place at Waelder City Park with the exception of Parade Sign-In, which occurs at St. Patrick Church, in Waelder, on US 90.
All Fiesta proceeds go to maintain and support St. Patrick Church.
Mexican Plates will be served both days beginning at noon on Saturday, with tamales, fajitas, gorditas, corn-on-the-cob, churros, funnel cakes and hamburgers completing the menu.
A gate fee of $2 will be charged up to 7 p.m., when it goes to $5. Children under 12, admitted free both days.
The Music Lineup is as follows: Saturday afternoon: DJ Blue and DJ Jimmy’z Jambox; the Evening Dance, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Sunday, David DeAnda y Xcelencia, backed up by Tejano Sounds.
Sunday afternoon, DJ Rando & Lupita Rodela. The signature Coronation Dance will be played by Conjunto Lumbre and “Cuatro Por Cuatro” from 7 p.m. until midnight.
