John Dean Warren

June 11, 1923-February 11, 2017

 

John Dean Warren, 93, of Gonzales, passed on to his Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday February 11, 2017 closely attended by his dear friends J.B. and Lucille Lester. John was born June 11, 1923 in DeLeon, Texas to Murmon Lee and Ila Mae Solley Warren. He married Irene Minnie Mueller on March 14, 1953 in Rosenberg, TX. John was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church and Pipef itters Union 211.

John grew up in DeLeon where his father worked for the railroad. Like many other kids he played football and baseball in high school before enlisting in the United States Army Air Corps in the midst of the fury of WWII. During his enlistment he helped build airstrips in the south pacific. His last days in the military were spent in Japan after the surrender. After his honorable discharge, John went to work for the Pipefitters Union 211 working to build refineries in Baytown and Houston until he retired in 1985.

Perri Bell March 26, 1920 January 31, 2017

Priscilla (Perri) Mann Bell died at age 96 on January 31, 2017, attended by loving family in a hospice unit at a Carrollton, Texas, hospital. After independent living in Carrollton since 2011 with devoted help and care from her son Richard, she was recently hospitalized with an infection of bacteria resistant to antibiotics. Perri Bell was an active youth, a wartime bride, a devoted wife and mother, of religious spirit, an inspiring teacher, and an adventuresome traveler.She was beloved by many and a talented leader in many activities, especially for her 100’s of students and colleagues in theater. Perri is survived by her older sister Jean, children Rodney III (wife Joan), Richard (Cherye), Priscilla (Jim Reitan), foster daughter Linda Vollentine, and cousin Tracy Ferguson.

Jesse “Uca” Maldonado January 25, 1945 Febfuary 7, 2017

Jesse “Uca” Maldonado, age 72, of Nixon, passed away February 7, 2017 in San Antonio. He was born January 25, 1945 in Nixon, Texas to Eugene and Elvira (Garcia) Maldonado. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Maldonado. Jesse is survived by his former spouse, Mary Maldonado of Nixon; his children: Joseph Maldonado and wife Theresa of San Marcos, Monica Garcia and husband Charlie of Lake Hills, Dolores “Dee” Covington and husband John of Canyon Lake, Jesse Maldonado Jr. of Nixon, Jacob Maldonado and Corina Angelica of Nixon; his grandchildren: Nikole, Ashlyn, Dylan, Derek, Emily, J.C., Kaden, Amaris, Jace, Aaron, and Devon; a great-grandchild, Kai Major; two sisters: Josephina Gaytan and husband Pete, Elvira “Beatty” Hilt; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as other loving family and many friends. A Visitation will be held Friday, February 10, 2017 from 5 PM – 8 PM at Finch Funeral Chapel in Nixon with a Rosary recited at 6:30 PM.

Walter Wayne “Javelina” Spahn November 29,1934 February 5, 2017

Walter Wayne “Javelina” Spahn passed away at his home on February 5, 2017 at the age of 82 surrounded by family. Wayne was born at home in Gonzales on November 29, 1934 to Walter Adam and Veda Caraway Spahn. He graduated from Gonzales High School in 1954 and married Loretta Barta on June 23, 1956. Farming and ranching and building chicken houses and barns throughout the area may have been his vocation, but his avocation was hunting and mentoring hunters. Nothing gave him more pleasure than taking a new hunter whether young or old on their first hunt. His rifle range by his home often served hundreds of shooters per year, with him usually sighting in their deer rifles in October. After graduation, Wayne joined the US National Guard where he received both the Soldier of the Year and Sharpshooter awards. He was a lifetime member of the NRA and has donated both his timeand efforts in support of the organization.

BARBARA LYNN MATINDALE SEARS PASSED January 31, 2017

Just as the San Marcos and Guadalupe Rivers flow and converge, so does the Emshoff/Martindale family tree! One of the last living “Martindales” from a legacy of “Martindales” from Caldwell County passed away on January 31, 2017 at 82 years of age. Barbara Lynn Martindale Sears is the daughter of Owen Dewitt Martindale (born in Lockhart, Texas) and Henrietta Emshoff (born in Washington on the Brazos). Owen was t he son of John Thomas (J.T.) Martindale (born in Tuppa County, Mississippi) and Cara Estes Martindale (born in Prairie Lea, Tx.). Owen had three siblings; Roswell (Uncle Toots) Martindale, Bernice Martindale and Merle Martindale Berkley (Dripping Springs, Texas). Henrietta Emshoff Martindale’s sister, Johanna was married to Godfrey Lassig of Gonzales, Texas (*one of 10 siblings).

Shirley (Smith) Shows, 78, of Gonzales, Texas died on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family and loved ones. Funeral Services are under the direction of Buffington Funeral Home in Gonzales, Texas and will be held at Eastside Baptist Church in Gonzales, Texas on Monday, January 30, 2017 at 10:00 am with Reverend Gene Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Woodmen of the World Cemetery in Gonzales, Texas. Visitation will be on Sunday, January 29, 2017 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Buffington Funeral Home. Shirley was born on July 30, 1938 in Gonzales, Texas. She was the daughter of Arthur Thomas and Jessie Ozena (Tharp) Smith. Shirley graduated from high school in 1957, and married her sweetheart, Leroy Shows on July 15, 1957 in Cuero, Texas. She loved cooking and baking. She baked cookies for Pioneer Village for many years and was known as the “Cookie Lady”. S hirley w as a b ig hearted and giving person.

Stanley Ray Cowey May 8, 1935 January 30, 2017

Stanley Ray Cowey, 81, of Gonzales passed away Monday, January 30, 2017. He was born May 8, 1935 in Dewville, Texas the son of James Stephen and Martha Emma Click Cowey. He served in the U.S. Army. He married Shirley Pape on December 15, 1956 at the Assembly of God Church in Nixon. After Ray’s military service, he attended barber college in El Paso, Texas. He was a longtime barber in Gonzales and owned Cowey’s Barber Shop from January 1963 until his retirement in Stanley Ray Cowey, 81, of Gonzales passed away Monday, January 30, 2017. He was born May 8, 1935 in Dewville, Texas the son of James Stephen and Martha Emma Click Cowey. He served in the U.S. Army. He married Shirley Pape on December 15, 1956 at the Assembly of God Church in Nixon. After Ray’s military service, he attended barber college in El Paso, Texas. He was a longtime barber in Gonzales and owned Cowey’s Barber Shop from January 1963 until his retirement in May 2 015. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church.

Darrell Gene McLain November 21, 1937 January 28, 2017

Darrell Gene McLain passed peacefully to his heavenly home, January 28, 2017. Darrell was an amazing man, a wonderful husband, father, Granddad, son, brother, uncle, mentor and friend to many. Darrell was born November 21, 1937 in Waterford, California to Floyd and Ruby McLain. He grew up in an agricultural environment where a strong work ethic was instilled. He developed a love for his Lord early in his life and this relationship grew and was shared with many over his years of service. As a boy, he developed an interest in chemistry, exhibited by formulating rocket fuel that did not propel the rocket, but blew a hole in the roof of the chicken coop. These interests later guided him into his first career as a chemist for Shell Development. Darrell married his childhood sweetheart and love of his life Helen Kathaleen Robertson on July 13, 1957. This marriage bore many fruits-four children, fourteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren to date.

Billy Ross McGinty, age 83 of Seguin, passed away on January 22, 2017.
 
Visitation will be Thursday, January 26, 2017 from 5-7 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary.
 
Funeral Services will be Friday, January 27, 2017 at 10 am at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Ron Welborn and Bill Knobles officiating. Interment will follow at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park.
 
He was born on July 14, 1933 in Wrightsboro, Texas to Adell Sloan McGinty and Orvon McGinty. Billy was raised in Gonzales, Texas and graduated Texas Lutheran University in 1955 with a degree in Math.
 
After graduating, he was in the Army for two years.
 
He met the love of his life, Betty Jo Gregory and they were married on November 14, 1959.
